Title Crowdsourcing: A Flexible Method for Innovation, Data Collection, and Analysis in Social Science Research
Year 2013
Access date 18.06.2014
Abstract

This chapter discusses each form of crowdsourcing and gives real-life examples of applied crowdsourcing in research. Researchers are just beginning to understand the power of crowdsourcing in social science, and they are excited about its prospects. The chapter describes two recent applications of open innovation in research project development—the 2009 Cisco challenge and the RTI 2012 Research Challenge. It examines four types of crowdsourced data collection namely crowdsourcing survey response, targeted data collection efforts, challenge-based data collection and citizen observation networks that are gaining popularity in social science research. After leveraging crowds to design a research study or using novel data collection methods, analysis is the logical next step. Sentiment analysis and data analysis are two rapidly growing areas of crowdsourcing analysis.
